Choose a Niche for Your Blog Wisely

Hi there! If you’r a beginner blogger then one thing that you might struggle with is “HOW TO CHOOSE A NICHE FOR YOUR BLOG“. It can be difficult in various ways, you probably thinking should you go for a niche that you’re passionate about? Or should you go for the one that more people are looking into?

But, don’t you all worry, because this post will help you Choose a Niche for your Blog.

First, let’s discuss the basics. And be sure to stay with me till the end, because a FREEBIE is waiting for you!

WHAT IS A NICHE? & WHY DO YOU NEED IT?

WHAT IS A NICHE?

A common question of new bloggers — What the heck is niche?

In my previous blog post, I already answered and explained, what is Niche in general.

So, niche is simply put as, YOUR BLOG’S TOPIC. What are you going to talk about?, are you going to talk about pets, diys, fitness, marriage, parenting etc.

When I first encountered the word niche, I mistakenly pronounced as ni/ch/e with “ch” being /ch/ as cheese. And then, I said, “umm.. No, there’s an ‘e’ ” and I pronounced it as Niche’ like cliche’ lol! Funny isn’t it?

Then I learned, the ch is actually pronounced as sh! To be a non-native, English is indeed confusing.

So, like I said, NICHE IS YOUR BLOG’S TOPIC.

But in terms of monetizing your blog as your main goal, which is the focus of this blog post by the way, then NICHE will become your TARGET AUDIENCE.

It answers the questions :

Who are you going to write for?

What problems are you going to give solutions to?

And also Kyle mentioned that in choosing your blog / website’s direction, it STARTS WITH A NICHE.

WHY DO YOU NEED TO HAVE A NICHE IN YOUR BLOG?

The answer is simple. Your blog needs to have a NICHE so, it will have a direction and focus.

If you have a niche, you know what topic are you going to research, to write about, and you will know which audience you need to reach out because you are actually aiming for them.

Let me give an example. Let’s say :

HOW TO CHOOSE A NICHE

BLOG NICHE : PETS – DOG

NARROWED : GERMAN SHEPERD

TARGET AUDIENCE : PEOPLE WHO OWNS GERMAN SHEPERD

So, from there, you can start your research on topics you think are the common problems that German Shepherd Owners have. Probably, proper diet for German Shepherd Breed or how to train German Shepherds at home. You know, something like that.

As you can see from the example, your blog’s niche have given you a direction on which topic to discuss. If you don’t have a niche on the other hand, your blog posts are going to be bouncing around, and you will not find your right audience.

How To Choose a Niche for Your Blog

With the explanations I made above, clearly, it is important to choose the right niche. But choosing one, can be a bit challenging. Because you really need to do an in-depth research regarding your chosen topic and also, you need to make sure for yourself that you can actually stick with your chosen niche.

And you can start the process of choosing the right niche by answering the question :

1. What Is The Purpose Of Your Blog?

Yep. That’s right. You need to ask yourself, “What is the purpose of your blog?” “Why do you want to start a blog?”

And I’m definitely sure you guys will have two different answers. One would be the purpose of SHARING YOUR KNOWLEDGE, YOUR EXPERIENCE OR EXPERTISE. Or in other words sharing things you are passionate about.

Second, is to MAKE MONEY. Earn passive income, ditch your 9-5 job and be your own boss! Familiar with these lines?

I know the latter sounds frank but, it is the truth. And I know you all agree with me.

Whether you want to blog for the purpose of sharing what you are passionate / knowledgeable about or for the purpose of making money, here’ are the things that you need to do if you want to :

A. TO SHARE YOUR EXPERTISE or KNOWLEDGE / PASSION

Let’s talk about it one by one.

SHARING YOUR EXPERTISE OR KNOWLEDGE – Well if you are already an expert on your chosen niche, then, good for you! It will be easy for you to create tons of blog posts on your topic.

For example, if you are already a body builder for x years, then it is easier for you come up with content ideas for both of your blogs and social media. Because you already know what topics or queries a “body builder wanna be” is actually searching for.

Simple because you are a body builder yourself. You’re experienced and you know about body building itself.

Another example is, let’s say if you are already a dog trainer. Same thing, creating blog posts about dog training would be a breeze because you are knowledgeable of the topic.

On the other hand if you are going to blog about your …

PASSION – Because many of beginner bloggers frequently ask before starting a blog is, “I’m not an expert at anything, can I still blog?” And the answer is YES. This is where your Passion is needed.

Here’s what you’re going to do. Make a list of at least 5 of your passion, things that you love doing or the things that you are good at. Remember, you don’t need to be the expert on the field, OK?

So, after listing out 5 things that you are passionate (or what you’re good at) about, write at least 20 possible topics that you can come up on each. Make sure to divide those topics in two :

Ones that you can basically write from the top of your head and topics that need research because you are willing to know more about it.

Now, here comes the elimination process. Among the 5 of your list, which one is the easiest to come up with ideas for? One tip that you need to remember is that, choose the one that has great and unique ideas.

Here are the steps in list form :

Just do it like the image on the side.

  1. Write down at least 5 of your passion, things that you are good at.
  2. Write down at least 20 possible topics for each one of them. Divide those topics into 2:
    1. Topics you can write blog posts from the top of your head;
    2. Topics that need research
  3. Eliminate by asking yourself : “Which one is the easiest to come up with ideas for?

After that, congratulations! You now have your winning NICHE.

B. MAKE MONEY

Another reason or purpose why somebody enters the blogging world is to MAKE MONEY. I mean, why not? Seeing other successful bloggers living a laptop lifestyle is just… INSPIRING! Who doesn’t want to be like that?

Here’s the thing, if your major reason for blogging is to make money, you need to do not just listing out things on a piece of paper but a lot of in depth research.

You need to know what is trending, what topics get a high volume of search. Means that, many people are searching for that topic.

You may use different tools to do your research and one of many other tools is Google Trends. Let me show you :

HOW TO CHOOSE A NICHE

From the above example, it shows that the topic E-Commerse gets a lot of search, you can therefore go for that NICHE. But, you should not go for E-Commerce in general, because like I said, you have to narrow and be specific!

The you can start your research for topics that goes around E-Commerce.

And now you can start making money! Nah! Just kidding!

Here’s my two cents though.

What I mentioned above on how to choose a niche, if in case your main purpose is to make money is just the tip of the iceberg. I know it looks easy but here’s the catch.

You may choose a niche that many people are searching for and the possibility of making money is higher. But, you’re not familiar with the topic and it’s not actually your interest plus, the fact that YOU ARE A BEGINNER.

What will happen next, you’ll get stuck in the middle, worst, you’ll quit. The result? Back to zero!

So, I would strongly suggest that do not go for the topic that you have zero knowledge or something that is not aligned with your personality.

My personal experience when I first chose a niche for my blog.

Like in my situation, on the beginning of this post I said that, I didn’t able to pursue my first chosen niche.

This website actually started with the purpose of it being an MMO Site (Make Money Online). But as I go on with the training and as I get to know what kind of blog posts I should create.

Which are review posts about other MMO or Multi Level Marketing platforms. It sounds easy, but the thing is I can not do it without actually trying it for myself. And if I do that, it will cost me money. I just can’t.

As a result, I changed my niche.

I hope you understand what I meant. Just don’t go for a niche because there’s money, you also have to think or ask yourself, if you know something about it or if not, are you willing to do an in-depth research to know more about your chosen niche.

That makes sense? Okay, let’s proceed.

So, the next question that you should be asking yourself to make sure YOU CHOOSE THE NICHE THAT YOU WON’T REGRET is…

2. Is Your Niche Profitable?

Is your chosen niche can make you money EVENTUALLY not instantly.

What I mean by this is, after deciding whether you’re going for your expertise or your passion as your niche, you should be asking yourself, if you can profit from that.

Here’s what you need to do to know if your niche is profitable. You may want to go Google and type :

“Affiliate marketing program” + “your niche”

Let me show you and I’ll use the BODY BUILDING NICHE and I’ll narrow it down as BODY BUILDING FOR MEN as an example :

How To Pick A Niche

From the result, you can see that from that blog alone, the author already mentioned affiliate programs that you can join if you are in Body Building Niche for Men.

Let’s go and have a look on Amazon, where most people choose to shop.

Wow! The result just give you products to write reviews about! Isn’t that something? Now, let’s click that accessory and equipment for product that you can offer.

Okay, these items are just the first list on the top and there are a lot of stuff to choose from as you scroll down.

Additional hint when choosing a product to promote. You have to look at customers’ review, I learned that if the star rating are 1000 above then, that’s a good product to promote. Because, people are actually buying that product.

You can do same thing with other prominent affiliate marketing programs such as ClickBank, ShareASale, JVZoo, and many more.

3. Do You Have Competitors on Your Niche? Do They Make Money? And How?

The reason why you need to know about this is to make sure that there are other people who are making money out of that niche. And how you can make money too.

You can do your research for your competitors to see on how they monetize your niche. You can either search for the latest blog posts, you can go to ALLTOP to do that.

And you can also go to YouTube as well. Be sure that the videos are the latest ones.

Here’s the thing, the reason why you need to search for your competitors is because, if you have competitors it means that there is market for it, there’s “money”.

If you don’t have competitors, then it means your chosen niche is not that profitable.

The last thing that you need to know if your niche is profitable for long terms is…

4. Can You Create Your Own Product?

Well, you’re not planning on sticking around with affiliate marketing forever, right?

I mean you can do it for as long as you want but it will be nice to find a better way to make money.

Besides, with affiliate marketing you are not in control. They can reduce your commission anytime, like what happened to Amazon ( I think last year?) that affected many affiliates.

So, in order to avoid that, you need to know if you can actually create YOUR OWN PRODUCT on your niche later on.

How many times, you came across with bloggers that eventually offer their services after they reach the certain point where they are able to coach or to teach their followers, right?

So ask yourself, if you can do the same thing in the long run. If you can, then, that’s gonna be your ultimate passive income!

  1. Hi Minah, This is a great article. I have had difficulties finding my niche initially, and it is a shame that I haven’t found your site earlier. Now I have a place in the health and wellness area, which is broad, making it challenging to stay focused on the topics. I love the way you explain it, even I understand it very well. And I will find my next niche considering your steps. Thank you very much! I am going to share your post!

  3. Having niche is definitely important, just like you stated, it gives you direction and focus. I also think you should be passionate about your niche as it makes it fun for you to write on. You will also know the type of audience you will be writing for which is also very important. You should also know the purpose for blogging, is it for money, is for fun, leisure. If it’s for money you really need to know how profitable your niche is before you take that first step towards earning money from it and a few other important things. Thank you Minah for sharing this detailed article.
