BLOGGING PLATFORM

WordPress.org

WordPress.org or some may say the “Real WordPress” because it is the most common and widely use. This is an open-source and can be use by anyone 100% free. You just have to get your domain name and your hosting.

WordPress.com

WordPress.com is more of a hosting service. The reason why I include in here is that most people actually get confused the two.

I’m sure that you’re are confused between WordPress.com and WordPress.org, right? ThemeIsle actually explained the difference between the two really well.

Medium

Medium.com

Medium is another blogging platform that I have come to know recently (oops!) although they’ve been in the internet since 2012. It is actually big for they have over 60 million active users and gets over 200 million views a month!

I’m going to try Medium as well, I’ll dive in it and let you’re know. Oh, you’re know what good about it? You can actually earn money! Wha–t??

I forgot, it’s free to write and join the Medium Partner Program (to earn money), but if you’re’ll just there to read, you’re only have 3 articles / month otherwise you’re need to pay $4.99 monthly subscription.

J.J. Pryor a member of Medium.com, created this post, “What is Medium? : A Complete Beginners Guide to The Writing Platform” that explains everything you’re need to know about blogging using Medium.

Blogger

Blogger.com

Is another blogging platform that’s been around since 1999! I used it before but didn’t continue. It’s easy and simple to use. So, if you’re just new to blogging, blogger can be a good start since it’s free.

Wealthy Affiliate

WealthyAffiliate.com

Okay, with this one, I would want to put Wealthy Affiliate as an exemption – Why, you’re may ask. Well Wealthy Affiliate is actually a learning platform that teaches and trains it’s members how to do affiliate marketing.

The reason why I include it on the list is that, you’re can also build your website / blog within WA. That is through their own website builder and hosting platform, SiteRubix.

Check my other post for complete list of blogging platform that you’re can use for free.

The downside of using these free platforms are the things that you’re can do are limited and you’re are not in total control of your blog.

HOW TO START A BLOG – BEGINNER’S GUIDE

FINDING DOMAIN NAME AND WHERE TO BUY (TOOLS?)

I tried hard to put these lists in order according to on how to build your website or how to start a blog. So after figuring out where or which platform you’re’re going to use, now, it’s time to find your domain names and where to buy it.

For me, this is the most exciting part, because this is going to be your brand from this day forward. Alright, this is where you’re can find your Domain name.

Instant Domain Search

Name.com

Name Cheap

GoDaddy

You can use these sites to find or check if the domain name that you’re like is available or not. And please do note that, whenever you’re decided to buy from any of it, will of course give you’re a charge because you’re are actually buying your own domain name.

But in my case, being a member of Wealthy Affiliate I didn’t have to go somewhere else just to check the availability of my preferred domain name. I actually had the process within the Wealthy Affiliate.

Let me show an example :

This is my actual profile in WA. As you’re can see on the website tab, not only you’re can check or find domains but also you’re can do a lot of websites related stuff. So, it’s like, Wealthy Affiliate is a one-stop shop.

BEST HOSTING PLATFORMS FOR WORDPRESS

I’m going to be in all honest with you’re on this one. Although I found some FREE hosting platforms, I haven’t tried it. I read reviews about some of the free hosting platform, but I’m just going to give you’re a few that I think is worthwhile.

  • 1 FTP Account

000WEBHOST

000webhost.com

Although I broke my words on Hostinger, this one is totally free! (Although I don’t recommend this one. Read further to know why.)

000WebHost.com actually host your website for FREE! $0 monthly! Literally ZERO. But, what”s the catch? Satoristudio created a review about it and said that, 000webHost has small monthly bandwidth.

Which means that the hosting provider can not guarantee if their servers can work 24/7/365 but more like 23/7/365. It will be fine if your website is just for personal or family use that would not require a lot of visitors.

So, here the things that you’re’ll get with $0 / monthly subscription :

GRAPHICS / IMAGE RESIZING & EDITING

Canva

If you’re are an experienced blogger or already started, you’re definitely what Canva and what it does for you’re. For those of you’re who doesn’t, Canva is a graphic design platform that allows users to create social media graphics, presentations, posters, documents and other visual content.

I like Canve personally. It makes my work easy.

Pablo by Buffer

Pablo.Buffer.com

Pablo or as they call it Pablo 2.0 is similar to Canva. I haven’t tried to use it though. But, Buffer describes it a tool that creates images to fit all social networks.

At Pablo, they have premade major sizes for social media. They have :

  • Tall & Vertical – Which is ideal for Pinterest.
  • Short & Horizontal – Which is ideal for Twitter and Facebook
  • Square – Which is ideal for Instagram and LinkdIn

And because its Buffer, it has the ability to share your images directly to your social media. I better put my hands on this next time.

Oh! Did I forgot to mention that Pablo is also for FREE?

PicMonkey

While Canva is meant for graphic designs that suits digital and print applications PicMonkey is more of day to day photo editing like resizing your images, filters, overlay and more.

It also enables you’re to create images for your social media as well. It focuses on Facebook, Instagram, and designing your YouTube channel.

That’s why it is also needed for optimizing images for your blog.

PicMonkey on web browser is FREE to use, but, you’re can not download your work unless you’re subscribe. On mobile app though, you’re can use it for free with limited features.

Snappa

Best Blogging Tools New Bloggers Should Try Now

Snappa is a cloud-based graphic editor for social media, personal, and marketing purposes. Here are the things that you’re can do with Snappa :

  • Image dimension for social media is available as clickable presets.
  • Premade Templates
  • Ove 4M High Resolution Stock Photos
  • Text, Graphics, and Effects Overlay
  • Remove Image Background with Just One Click (Ooohh)
  • Resizing Images
  • Share Your Work to Social Media within Snappa.
  • If you’re have Buffer account, you’re also schedule your posts.

All those stuff I mentioned above are available on paid account unfortunately. But, you’re can be a FREE member too. Which allows you’re to use 6000+ templates, 4,000,000+ HD Photos and Graphics. The downside is, you’re can only have 3 downloads per month.

I strongly suggest that you check the websites of all the platforms I provided on my GRAPHICS / IMAGE RESIZING & EDITING section so, you can see it for yourself and can weigh things depending on your needs.

Free is good but always remember that it has a limited features.

SITE SPEED OPTIMIZATION PLUGINS

WP Fastest Cache

An easy to use plugin focusing on caching to improve your website’s performance.

WP Super Cache

With over 5.5 Million downloads, you’re can definitely tell that WP Super Cache is popular to websites owners. And the most widely used caching plugins available in WordPress.

WP Smush

I already mentioned WP Smush on previous part of this post but, didn’t able to say something about it. So here’s what WP Smush can do to your site.

WP Smush optimizes your images, turn on lazy load, resize, compress and improve your Google page Speed. This plugin is powerful yet you’re can use it 100% FREE

LazyLoad by WP Rocket

Best Blogging Tools New Bloggers Should Try Now!

“Lazy Load” from the name itself you’re can literally tell what this plugin does. If you’re don’t understand, I’ll give you’re an example, if a visitor or yo even, visit a website, it tries to load the entire page!

If the page that you’re clicked to load has lots of images in it, then, it will take your loading time really slow. Therefore, that visitor won’t stay and wait for all of it load– your visitor will eventually leave.

So, what does LazyLoad do, is it loads the specific element only when needed.

To be honest, I am currently using WP Smush, to optimize my images, but as I observe my website, I think I need LazyLoad rather than Smush. So, I will be switching to LazyLoad later on.

SITE SECURITY & BACKUP TOOLS

BACKUP TOOLS

Backing up your website regularly is a must.

Backup make your site secure and always safe. It is crucially important specially if someone attempted to hack your site or even a human error, a mistake made by you’re and sometimes a problem may occur in your hosting platform.

Therefore, backing up your website on a regular basis will help you’re to restore your data quickly so you’re can have your website up and running again.

Just imagine if you’re don’t backup your website and any of those problems I mentioned above occurred… Oh, boy!!

Although there are hosting platforms that provide backups for your website you’re can also do it by using these plugins :

UpDraft Plus

UpDraftPlus.com

With over 3+ MILLION downloads, no wonder why UpDraft Plus is considered the most popular free WordPress plugin in the internet!

You can use this for FREE but for you’re to get the most functionality of UpDraft Plus, you’re can subscribe to its Premium membership.

BackUp Buddy

BackUp Buddy is also one of the most popular premium WordPress Plugin with half a Million users since 2010.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t offer FREE membership but with $80 as a start, BackUp Buddy will :

  • Back up your 1 site
  • 1 year of plugin updates
  • 1 year of ticketed support
  • 1 GB of BackUp Buddy Stash storage space
  • 1 year access to Stash Live

Although I gave you’re two examples of backup plugins that you’re can use, I just want to let you’re know that I don’t actually use them because I avoid installing too many plugins on my site, it somehow affects its speed.

Luckily, my hosting platform, which is Wealthy Affiliate actually do the job for me.

But there are times that I manually back up my website without using any plugin and here’s how :

PROOF READING & GRAMMAR CHECKER TOOLS

Being a blogger, spelling, grammar, and sentence structures are important. Well, it doesn’t mean that you’re really have to be 100% grammatically correct, but you’re have to be at least articulate and be sure that your sentences flows and connect with each other.

Remember that, your writing represents you’re. So, it only makes sense to focus on it as well.

It is hard specially if you’re’re non- English speaker, believe me, I know. But no worries, here are some the tools that can help you’re with that :

Grammarly

I put in on the number one, not because it’s my favorite, but, I’m thinking that you’re would be familiar with it because Grammarly is one of the most popular grammar editing tools online.

Once you’re let Grammarly do its job, it checks your written content for all types of mistakes like, misused words, sentence structure, spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

After it checked your work, it will give suggestions which word / words would be appropriate.

Grammarly has a FREE Plan, but of course, with very limited features like the following :

  • Basic writing sguggestions
  • Spelling
  • Grammar
  • Punctuation

ProWritingAid

ProWritingAid is another popular tool for bloggers and content creators as well. This tool is a grammar checker and style editor all in one. ProWritingAid helps you’re to quickly edit grammar and punctuations, remove errors, and also shows you’re suggested words to improve your writing and your content readability.

ProWritingAid comes with a FREE plan too, and like other platforms, expect that it will only offers you’re a very limited features like the following :

  • Summary Report of Key Issues
  • 19 Writing Reports
  • Edit 500 words at a time
  • Available as an online editing tool only (no access to the desktop version)

Wealthy Affiliate SiteContent

Yes, I included the one that I am currently using which is the SiteContent within the Wealthy Affiliate platform.

The SiteContent which is one of the robust features of WA, where members compose or create their blog post before publishing it to their WordPress website. WA SiteContent checks your work for :

  • Spelling
  • Grammar
  • Plagiarism

Plagiarism checker is a really important if you’re are a writer, because it checks your work for similarities to others. And in case with ProWritingAid, you’re have to buy credits to avail plagiarism checker, while in Wealthy Affiliate, it is included in your membership fee.

PRODUCTIVITY & ORGANIZATION

To be a blogger you’re need to be organized. Even if you’re are a messy person by nature, when you’re started blogging you’re will notice that you’re are actually forced to be in order.

It will start first on collecting ideas for your blog post, planning your content for both blog and social media, down to scheduling tasks as you’re grow.

So it is important to stay organize, luckily there are tools out there that can help you’re and here are few FREE ones on the list :

GOOGLE

Do not under estimate Google, there are tools under it that can be friendly to you’re a blogger, newbie or not.

Google Docs

I know that you’re already heard of it. But this powerful and FREE tool is actually handy in creating your blog post, or just gather all the idea you’re have, instead of writing all of it in a piece of paper (guilty of it!).

Plus, Google Docs is a good tool if you’re are collaborating with somebody else or group of people as well. Google Docs has a built in spell checker too.

But you’re can only work on it online which, I believe is the downside of it.

Google Sheets

I personally use Google Sheets to list, categorize, and organize my future blog post ideas. This tool is really helpful specially if you’re’re starting out on a tight budget.

Google Calendar

I’m loving the Google Calendar lately because, it makes scheduling tasks easy. And what I love the most is the ability to color block, it’s like color coding your specific schedule or task.

So it is easy to easy what you’re need to do on that particular day, and easy to distinguish if the certain task is personal or for your business or blogging.

AN EXTRA TOOL

Last but not the least, there’s another productivity tool that I came across while creating this post. And I am pretty sure that if you’re’re someone who has difficulty focusing on your work, like me, then I bet this will be helpful.

Egg-Timer

From the name itself, E.ggtimer is an online countdown timer where you’re can input your desired time to complete a particular task.

When you’re know that you’re are timed, it helps you’re stay focused more. It’s like being on a game show, or beating a Guiness Book Record holder, you’re tend to pay your attention on completing your task against time.

As a result, you’re maximize your productivity.

The great part is, it is online so, therefore no download needed and you’re can use it for FREE!

CONCLUSION

Phew! 😅. Now we are down in conclusion! Are you’re still with me? If you’re are, then, surely you’re know that you’re benefit from the lists I provided you’re (hope you’re do!)

I’m gonna be honest with you’re, even though I’m blogging for 2 years now (not constantly though…) I’m still using free stuff. Except for the hosting and domain name.

And that’s because I’m a Wealthy Affiliate member. It’s like everything that I need for my “blogging business” is all in one roof. What Wealthy Affiliate does for me and for its members are :

  • It provides intermediate website and hosting.
  • Enhanced hosting security.
  • Includes SSL.
  • SiteSpeed Extreme Caching.
  • Google PageSpeed.
  • SiteContent that has built in Spelling & Grammar Checker and also Plagiarism.
  • SiteSupport 24/7
  • Plus it includes training that you’re need to establish and run your website.
  • And many more.

So, if you’re’re a total newbie to all of these, blogging and website building and if you’re’re not a techy at all, then, it will be relief to find a platform that will cover everything for you’re especially technical stuff, right?

That’s why I chose Wealthy Affiliate. If you’re want to learn more about it, here’s my review post :

  1. Minah,

Great article and very in depth. I have to admit, this was a lot of information to take in at once. A lot of people will enjoy the amount of information you’ve given them. I think that WordPress is my favorite as far as hosting platforms go. They seem to be the easiest to work with on a regular basis.

    Thanks for the information!

  2. That’s a completely list of amazing tools that are so important on a daily basis for any blogger. I use some of them. For sure will try out others like ProWritingAid and some plugins for image optimisation, which is very important to make site more friendly. One thing that stood out for me was the security tools, sometimes we don’t give too much attention to it. As a new blogger a can say it is a very good list. Really useful. Thank you for that.

  3. Minah,

Firstly, I have to say one thing:

    AWESOME

What a fantastic list, and I’ll be honest with you, this isn’t just for new bloggers.

I’ve been blogging for around 11 years now. I have used many of the tools that you mention here, but there are some that in my decade + online I am yet to use, and some that I’ve never even heard of.

So, I applaud you for such an outstanding and informative list.

I know for me, there’s certainly a few tools on here that I definitely couldn’t live without.

For me, WordPress.org is the “go-to” website builder of choice, especially for those who are completely new to blogging, as the set up and ease of use is simple (even for a non-techie like me, LOL).

In fact, I’ve even read recently that of the approximate 1.3 billion websites online, 20% of these are WordPress. So, we’re talking some 455,000,000 WordPress websites.

And yet the vast majority look completely different from each other, which goes to show the wealth of customization tools that are available to you.

I have also used many of the hosting providers, SEO tools, image resources, and email marketing platforms you have mentioned here.

So, I can attest to the fact that they all work extremely well.

Finally, I don’t know where I’d be without Google Docs – completely free and so easy to use, and it definitely forms part of my every day life.

Minah, a wonderful read, and one that I’m sure others will be very appreciative of.

Well done, and keep up the great work.

  4. This was a lot of information to read here, but it helped me with my blog. I work with WordPress and I like it very much. My daughter blog as well and she’s with Bluehost. I don’t know much about Bluehost but I’m going to share this article with her that she can have the chance to read it. Thank you for sharing this with us. Great article and very in-depth.

  5. Hi.

This is a superb Blog Post and it must have taken you some time to put together. It contain absolutely everything a person needs to start, just as the headline says.

I have skipped through some parts, because I am quite familiar with them but came across information that interested me a lot. I have been thinking about using Moz for a while, but I don’t think I haven’t done enough research yet. I’m glad I have seen it mentioned here, because it doesn’t seem to be recommended very often, even though it looks like an awesome tool.

Thanks again and I will bookmark this for future reference or to share with others.

    • Hi Silvie,
Thanks for the comment and for your kind words.
I see to it I listed all the stuff that a new blogger would need before he/she start a blog.

That’s actually true, MOZ is not being mentioned often compared to SemRush and Ahrefs.
But I think,. MOZ is pretty decent as well.
I’d like to dig in more deeper about it too. Maybe it’ll be better from the ne I’m usiung right now.

      Be safe.

  6. I don’t know if there’s a more thorough article out there than this one. Honestly I’m not disappointed to have landed on your site.

I already knew some of the features you listed above, but I had no idea about the majority. So, thanks.

Also, I already created an account at Bloger.com but I don’t have time to write articles there, as I’m too busy writing on my own blog.

    Take care

    • Hey Warren! Thanks for dropping by!
I tried my best to include “everything” to make sure I won’t miss a thing.
Anyway, the tools and plugins on my list are actually most bloggers like you and are using.

Blogger changed a lot, compared to previous years. I’ve been wanting to use Medium also,
but I need to be really good in time management for that to happen.

      Be safe!
