THE GOOD AND THE BAD OF AFFILIATE MARKETING

Indeed, Affiliate Marketing Business will change your life, if done correctly. And it really gives you the opportunity to make money online, but— please be warned that like any other businesses, Affiliate Marketing has its own pitfall too. I managed to list a few of the Good & the Bad side of it :

THE GOOD

Low Start Up Cost

– There are few online platforms that will let you build your Affiliate Marketing business with small investment. You can have you business up and running for as low a $2 a day, that can potentially earn you a consistent income. Interested to know what it is? Click ——-> here.

Zero Product Cost

– Since you are selling other people’s products, Affiliate Marketing doesn’t require you to buy the products. As a matter of fact you can join to be an affiliate for free. And if you become a successful affiliate marketer, there will be times that the companies will even contact you to try their product and post a review for them.

Potential Positive Income

– As I mentioned, Affiliate Marketing Business has the potential of giving you the passive income that we are all hoping for.

THE BAD

Requires Lots and Lots of Time

– A lot of beginners who enters Affiliate Marketing World thinks that they’ll get their income after a couple of posts or so. NO! It will take at least a month to six months or even longer depending on how you work to get your website off the ground.

Luckily the startup cost is low, so you don’t have to worry that you’ll be broke while waiting for your business to profit.

4 Online Business You Can Start in 2019

2. START A BLOG AND MONETIZE IT

4 Online Business That You Can Start In 2019

For sure you all know that Blogging is becoming more and more popular these days. Way back, blogging was just used by people who wants to share their day to day activity ( I, myself as an example).

But now, Blogging is also one way and the easiest to start or to build. Plus, blogging is not difficult to make money online in the long run.

It would be easy if you know how to properly monetize it. And because it has a low startup cost too, you can get started with blogging even for free.

Still, you have to keep in mind that it involves a lot of writing quality content, while making sure that it is search engine optimized, and that your article answers a problem. Also, getting traffic is the crucial part, you can’t monetize your blog if you don’t have an audience.

Few ways to monetize your blog :

Google Adsense

– These are the Ads that you commonly see on a blog post. And if somebody clicks on an ad, you’ll get cents that will accumulate over time. How you do it is, you copy and paste the code to your website– and ad will appear on you blog automatically. You don’t have to worry that you blog may look “spammy” because Google will show ad that is based or related to your niche.

– But I wouldn’t recommend it to total beginners. Don’t jump onto using Ads if you don’t fully understand how it works, you might lose your money instead of earning it.

Affiliate Marketing

– Like what I have mentioned, you can affiliate marketing in several ways, it can be through a video or a blog content.

Paid Reviews / Banner Ads

– This can only happen if you have already established your website and managed to gather a decent amount of audience. There will be business that will approach or ask you to :

Write a review of their product that they sent you. In return, they will pay you for that review. That’s why it’s called, Paid review. No worries, you don’t need to write just positive things about the product. Or in some cases, a business will ask you to sponsor a specific post in exchange for a backlink for their site.

The Banner Ads are ads that is usually on your side bar. The business will approach you to keep the ad on your site and will often pay you monthly.

THE GOOD & THE BAD OF BLOGGING

Like the other business that I mentioned above, Blogging has its own “dark side”.  Most people thinks that blogging is easy, jumping onto it half blindfolded. This part is not to discourage you but to give you heads up on what you are about to do. And being aware of this will help you to succeed even more.

THE GOOD

Starting a Blog Is Easy

– Getting started with blogging these days is way to easy! With templates already provided and plugins that you can install– You can design your website the way it fits you. To be honest you can have your blog up and running in just minutes!

Also, if you love writing, then… Blogging will be easy as 1,2,3!

You Can Establish Authority

– When you blog, you educate your readers by sharing information and knowledge about the niche you are into. You showcase your talent and with consistency, your blog builds your readers’ trust.

Resulting to your blog being recognized as an authority in your niche.

So, in writing a blog post it is essential to create a quality, unique and authoritative content consistently, to achieve higher ranking in search engines. A good blog attracts new readers, who then may become your loyal readers and eventually become your customers as well.

Location & Time Flexibility

– This is the top reason why almost everyone wants to blog. Since laptop and location with wifi access (and maybe coffee) are all you need to blog— It’s almost possible to work anywhere!

THE BAD

Requires Significant Amount of Time

– Okay, with this part I might confuse you. Although, I said that blogging is easy, you have to know that Blogging requires a significant time upfront.

Writing a blog post is not that easy as you thought especially if you’re not a born writer. There are things that you need to consider first everytime you create a post particularly when you’re trying to monetize your site.

So, it is very important that you follow a method that teaches you about SEO, using proper keywords and technique on how you can get traffic to your blog. And you should expect to do a lot of research to write a single post to give your readers precise information.

It Is Not A Get-Rich-Quick Scheme

– Every business requires time to grow. You are building your business through blog content… So expect that you will not get the success you are dreaming for, after writing a couple of blog posts. That is not the case. Blogging takes serious commitment in your part.

3. DROP SHIPPING

You all probably purchased a product from an online store like Amazon at some point of your lives.

With more and more people using the internet, it opens a door for you to start your own on Internet that sold products like larger online retailers and the thing is you only pay the product you’re selling after it has been sold. So this is what eCommerce drop shipping online store is all about.

THE GOOD & THE BAD OF DROP SHIPPING

Although Drop shipping sounds easy to do, aside from the fact that you can start it for free, like for example in Shopify, that offers 30-day trial, it’s essential that you learn few skills a few skills before jumping onto drop shipping business.

  • It is necessary that at least you have an experience or knowledge on :
  • How to build an ecommerce site / store.
  • How to get traffic
  • Choosing or determining the right products.
  • Social Media Marketing. Social media will be the great tool to market your product.

Again, I would say that drop shipping online business is not for those one who are just starting out. It requires skills and enough knowledge of the business before, you could actually do it.

THE GOOD

Low Startup Cost

– Probably the biggest advantage of drop shipping is that, you can build your ecommerce store without having a large inventory of products or handle any delivery to your customers. We all know how expensive it is to have and maintain a warehouse, in that case, it eliminates the financial cost and risk of storing products that might not sell.

Low Overhead Cost

– Since drop shipping can be done or operate from your home office, like many other successful online drop shipping business owners do, you don’t have to deal with purchasing inventory or managing a warehouse. Therefore, your overhead expenses are quite low.

Flexible Location

– You can run your drop shipping online business anywhere with just a laptop and an internet connection.

Works Globally

– Since your business is online, you have the opportunity to attract more customers globally which mean having billions of potential customers.

THE BAD

Low Profit Margin

– Since you don’t have to manage or store your own inventory and the overhead expense is low and don’t worry about the shipment— but, so are the returns.

So it’s like your drop shipping partners do all the heavy lifting for you, so should expect that they’ll have significant cut of your profit.

Puts Your Money At Risk

– You might think that, this is opposite of what I said earlier. Sure, drop shipping is no need for inventory or warehouse– but, it is so easy to start, that there is a high competition. In order for you to stay above you might spend money on paid advertising to attract customers to your store. If you are not experienced enough, or use the paid advertising the wrong way, you might end up investing thousands of dollars with zero sale.

No Control Over the Product

– Since you don’t have the product, you don’t deliver it yourself— You’re more or less at the mercy of your supplier. Meaning if the supplier happens to make a mistake, like, delivering the product late, damages the item or sending the wrong item– your customer will take it out to you.

Dropshippers / You are the one who still has to deal with your customers directly.

4. OPENING AN ETSY STORE

Are you a creative person, who loves diy’s, making your own accessories, jewelry or even house decor. Do you crafts or even arts? Do you have skills on designing and making printable stickers?

If you are, you might want to consider selling your creations by opening an online store at Etsy.

Etsy is an online business model with a twist that offers crafters like you to sell your handmade goods or vintage goods from. The cost of running an Etsy store is low compared to many other platforms.

THE GOOD & THE BAD OF RUNNING AN ETSY STORE

Just like all the other business, running an Etsy store can be a great way to earn you income, but as always there some things you should be aware about before getting started.

THE GOOD

Low Atartup Cost

– You can start an Etsy store for almost free although you have to pay $0.20 as a listing fee per product. So it is very reasonable compared to other platforms.

Provides Training & Support

– Aside from joining Etsy for free, it provides you support and training that includes online marketing training course covers the basics of SEO

Built-In Audience

– Many people search first in Etsy before they even go to Google when they want to find a specific product. Which, means it gives you a very large audience to sell to.

THE BAD

Total Market Saturation

– With increasing number of sellers who are joining Etsy, it will be really hard for new shops to get noticed.

Time Consuming

– Opening a store at Etsy will require you a significant time investment, because you need to create your own product to sell.

Difficulties on Finding the Right Product

– Just like eCommerce drop shipping, if you do not know or fully understand how to find a product that sells, then, you’re going to struggle running your Etsy store.

FINAL THOUGHTS

As you can see from the lists of online businesses I provided, you should’ve noticed that, there is no perfect opportunity to start your own online business. I therefore recommend to start out with affiliate marketing first, where you learn and develop the crucial skills you will need in order to have a successful online business.

And those skills are to know your potential customers, getting your traffic and converting them to sales, identifying the right products, and how to properly use SEO that will help your product’s promotion.

  1. Thank you , thank you, thank you for explaining drop shipping. I have heard of it and wondered about it.

You did a great job explaining all of this, and I love the pros and cons. I prefer to know EVERYTHING I’m getting into instead of just the stuff we see with our rose-colored glasses.

    • Thanks Kelli! Glad that somehow this article helped you.
I wanted to try drop shipping as well, so I went on digging. But… I don’t think
I’m ready for it, it has a lot to take.

I tried to listed out the pros and cons as well, I am a reader too.
And I prefer a single post that contains most information I need.

Hi there, This is a really informative article and has introduced me to several interesting options that I haven’t seen before. i’m really hoping to settle for something soon and this post may have narrowed it down somewhat for me. I am under no illusion that whatever option I choose there are no get rich quick schemes and I must be in it for the long hall if I am going to make a future out of it

  3. Hi Minah, I think I’ll stick to affiliate marketing too.

I love that this way of internet business leaves me full freedom of when and where I work.

I don’t have much money to invest and can still sell products that are worth tens of thousands of dollars. I worked in a brick and mortar business and learned how hard it can be to get a job, to talk with clients, to handle complaints.

It’s really not easy these days. With an affiliate website people buy or the don’t, if they do you get the commission and that’s it.

    • Yes. Definitely! That’s the beauty of Affiliate Marketing!

I myself worked on Retail Industry, and costumers are difficult to handle! and imagine how worst will it be, because it’s online? You don’t get see the package/product itself. So, yeah, I prefer Affiliate Marketing too.

Thanks Stefan for spending your time reading my long post! 😊

  5. I definitely prefer affiliate marketing as far as doing online business is concerned. While most people can’t stand the amount of time it takes to build an affiliate marketing business, I have the patience to do it. On top of that, Id rather not deal with customers directly just as drop shippers have to do. All the customer issues belong to the vendors that I am affiliated with.

    • Exactly! I think Affiliate Marketing is the easiest way to do, well it takes time to see results, as well as all businesses. Specially if you are just starting out. Affiliate Marketing is a great way to prepare you for other online business, in case you want to try.

  7. You make some very good points. The internet has changed over the years and technology is something that is constantly and rapidly changing. I love the idea of affiliate marketing and blogging (I use my blog/site for affiliate marketing) because I love writing, helping people and love the idea that when I do start earning from my blog that it could potentially be passive income.

Although I combine blogging with affiliate marketing, I like how you separated creating a website and affiliate marketing. I do have a question though:

What are your thoughts on using Google Adsense on a blog or website? Do you feel this is a tool that’s more useful for certain niches? Or have you found that Google Adsense is a good form of income for any niche?

    Reply
    • Hi Aria!
Glad that you agree with my post.

      And very good question!
To answer that, well I haven’t really put much focus on Google Adsense, because I’m not planning to do it yet.
But, here’s what I know, Google Adsense is a good way to monetize your blog but, in my opinion– the blogger should be at least getting
certain amount of traffic otherwise, you’ll just spending your money for nothing.
And I think Google Adsense is not allowed on certain niches unlike affiliate marketing. You can find affiliate products on all niches.

      Hope it clears everything.

      Thanks again Aria!

  8. Yes, Mina. I agree with you totally. Prior to that, I started off doing Clickfunnel. It was not easy when I needed to set up a lot of stuff. I even had to purchase other email responder software at an additional cost. There is also a lot of settings which was really complicated and very technical. After much hassle and paying for expensive advertising, there were no sales. I had to stop it as I also needed to pay the monthly subscription for the funnel program. It was not cheap. From there, I moved on to do dropshipping and it also took a long while to set up, although it was less technical. The downside was, there were hidden costs which a lot of successful dropshippers seldom disclosed; advertising on FB and Google Ad. After spending a certain amount of money to drive in traffic, there was no sale at all. This went on for a few months. After coming to know about affiliate marketing before I join WA, I compared and understood that affiliate marketing is far better than dropshipping. It is easier. There is no need to set up a store with products import, no need to spend time to change the description/text of the products. You also need to keep on testing the winning products and have to invest a lot in the different advertising campaigns. It’s very costly.
There was once I paid a one-time payment of ~US@200 and there are videos and private FB grp support. Yet, it did not deliver as promised. The so-called chat support didn’t even answer my question properly; and sometimes, never even reply at all.
You need to look out for a community/platform which has a systematic train, learn and earn system.

    • Hi Terand!
Oh.. I’m sorry to hear you needed to go the hard way.
Actually, I was about to fall for the same thing! The only source I’ve got that time is YouTube– and there was this guy who’s
promoting 4%– there I said it!– but the guy that I’m talking about is an affiliate, so he’s really pushing the click funnel, and then
I need to an autoresponder and all that. Oh and he even mentioned to use the Udemi? Where you can buy or pay someone to let you use their email list?
So I was on the verge of grabbing it. I’m calculating the money that I need to use. But then, my guts was telling me that this is way too much. Because,
the payment I will be facing is monthly without an assurance that it’s gonna work. Then, I turned my back and logged from internet for a while.

Then after a few months, I found WA.

You really had a hard time— but I think there is something that we learn on every challenges we face. I am glad that you too, found Wealthy Affiliate!
I wish success for both of us!

      • Luckily you did not join. For the funnel, you know it’s a heavy investment. As for for the email responder I paid US$15/mth? You can opt for a higher pricing package if you want to. It’s not that those platforms cannot be successful but it requires not only hard work(for all trades) but a lot of upfronts and hidden advertising cost(for instance, I use ‘Udimi’ to engage a so-called expert to get traffic to my website, it was very expensive!). Prior to knowing WA, I was searching online for a review on another program and I happened to bump into my mentor’s website. In fact, I found Kyle and Carson a few months ago. At that time, I was engaged in my Shopify store. Not that I purposely ignore them. ? It’s my fate that I must go one big round and come back to join WA. Probably, this is the way I should learn and grow. Lol. Not bad anyway :o)

        Reply
        • Oh, really?
WE almost have the “same” fate– but luckily I didn’t join. ?.
But… you know what– your experience thaught you a lot! You can consider yourself an expert already.
Coz you probably know the ins & outs of online businesses, right?

Anyway as what other people said– Let’s charge it to experience.?

          Reply
          • Lol. I am not an expert but all those failures will make us successful entrepreneurs. I am still considering new in this aspect and always have a long road to learn and grow. Lifelong learning process. Yes, let’s charge it to experience! All the best and take care too, Mina! :o)

  11. Hello Mina and thank you for this article. I can defectively concur in what you are telling about most of these businesses. I I started out with dropshipping, failed at that.. Went to an MLM company, failed there too. Then I spent about 2 years researching the web until my brain felt like mashed potatoes, then I finally got into Affiliate marketing and it has been a game changer. All the skills I lacked to be successful in those markets, I now get during my affiliate training!
Do start slow as Mina says, and you will be a step ahead of most people that just are starting their online businesses!

This was a very informative and helpful post. I know from experience that these 4 methods of making money online are reliable and I think that the way you explained it was really useful to those that don’t fully understand each method. My main way of earning money online is affiliate marketing but am thinking of doing more in drop shipping soon. Thanks for sharing 🙂

  14. I like all four of your tips. I’ll start from the bottom up:

I’ve looked into Etsy and considered it; but as you said, it takes time. Now, I don’t know about setting up a store, but I know that you have to make the crafts. I make one mean brownie, but I just don’t have that kind of time right now.

Drop ship – I don’t know much about this.

Affiliate marketing and Blogging – you are so right about both of these. Both of these are like starting a new business. IT’S GONNA TAKE TIME TO GET OFF OF THE GROUND. If you are looking to make money now, be a barista or something while you do this. Customers have to get to know you and such before they spend money with you.

    Thanks for these tips.

actually have a job while you’re doing it.

  15. Loved your post.  Wish I had this insight 3yrs ago.  I personally have tried both Etsy and Dropshipping. I managed to sell one item on Etsy after six months. Lost a lot of money on dropshipping by opening on online store. I sold 3 items in over a year and a half. Two of the items were from friends and the other one found my site. The hardest part was getting it indexed in Google.  Will say that I was able to sell items on Ebay.  My turn off on that was how many people abuse it. So many people purchase items and report them as broken or not what they wanted to get the item for free.  You wouldn’t believe how many people I had to report.  I am now working on Blogging and Affiliate Marketing. Still trying to sustain a business from home. Wish me luck.

  16. Great post. As 2019 is fast approaching, I wonder how many people during 2018 thought of embarking on a new business adventure. I love the way you pointed out the good vs the bad, because, when looking for a business, the risk associated with something new turn people away. It was also very important that you stated these are not “get rich quick” plans, so in essence, do your homework. Affiliate marketing is very popular, but you are right, having a blog page associated with your Affiliate Marketing program expecting to generate some income, one would be in for a rude awakening. So the low startup is great. I do have a blog page and yes it takes time to learn the hows and implement what you have learned. But once you learn it as see visitors and inquires. The process makes you feel good and it motivates.

I am currently working as a freelance web writer and proofreader, but I am determined to create my own online business. You have come up with some great ideas that I will definitely be looking into. Affiliate marketing looks to be the way to go for me, definitely not Etsy as I am not creative!
    All the best, Diane x

    • Hi Diane,
Glad that you found value on my post.
You have a cool job, and you can definitely leverage your skills if you finally create your online business.
I bet you’ll be successful in that field and mixing it with Affiliate Marketing? Ugh.. that will be awesome!

Thanks for dropping by and wishing you success,

  18. Great post! I love affiliate marketing, but I am always looking at other forms of online income that I can add into my life.
It seems like drop shipping is the way to go. I have heard of Shopify and Etsy, but I am not crafty. Is it hard to set up a shopify store? And how do you decide which products are worthwhile to sell? Are their quality courses available on how to get started and can you point me to one?? Thanks in advance!

    • Hi Irma,
Diversifying your income is a good move. But you have to keep in mind that it won’t be easy.
i have heard a lot people who failed in drop shipping although there are some who are successful as well.
Maybe what I want to say is you should be careful and do a lot of research before you finally make up your mind.

And I would suggest that you follow a training that will really show you how to do things properly, like for example—
      Choosing products to sell.
I know one program that offers courses on not only affiliate marketing but online marketing as well.
You may want to check this for further details.

      Thanks and wishing you success,

  19. I wish the process is shorter. You said we need at least six months. However I wonder how long does it take to have a full time income? What are your experiences?

    • Hi Furkan,

Yeah, I agree– I wish there’s a shorter way but, there’s none. Well, there might be– butfurely it won’t be sturdy enough to face hurdles.
I mentioned that it takes six months at least to see some result, but I also mentioned that— THE SUCCESS WE ARE ALL TRYING TO ACHIEVE IS LIES IN OUR HANDS.
If you will not work— then– no result. So it’s like, the water will not boil if you just look at it.

Right now, for me, my site still new. So I’m still in the process of molding it. I’m balancing my time between my day job, personal and with my site.
Trying my best to put consistent effort on posting blog, and updating my old ones. While undergoing a training to improve my website.

      Thanks and Wishing you success,
      Mina

  21. This is highly educative content Minah. The key to making money online seems to be what you just mentioned; realizing that it is not a get-rich-quick scheme. I think it is encouraging to know that we have to put in steady work and effort to realize our aspirations to build businesses online in 2019. Thank you. I love your site.
